A falling film evaporator is an industrial device to concentrate solutions, especially with heat sensitive components. The evaporator is a special type of heatexchanger. In a falling film evaporator, the liquid is fed at the top of the tubes in a vertical tube bundle. The liquid is allowed to flow down through the inner wall of the tubes as a film. As the liquid travels down the tubes the solvent vaporizes and the concentration gradually increases. Vapor and liquid are usually separated at the bottom of the tubes and the thick liquor is taken out. Evaporator liquid is recirculated through the tubes by a pump below the vapor-liquid separator. The distribution of liquid in the inner wall of the tubes greatly affects the performance of this type of evaporator.The falling film evaporator is largely used for concentration of fruit juices and heat sensitive materials because of the low holdup time.

A rotary evaporator (rotavap) is a device used in chemical industries for the efficient and gentle removal of solvents from samples by evaporation. Rotary evaporator increases the evaporation of solvent by
⦁ Decreasing the pressure to lower the solvent boiling point.
⦁ Rotating the solvent to increase the surface area.
⦁ Heating the solution.

multiple effect evaporator

With the increasing trend in the cost of coal, fuel oil etc; it becomes mandatory to use the vapors of previous effect in the steam chest of following effect. This requires the multiple effect evaporator system. As the number of effect increases the steam economy increases on the other side capital cost will be more. In a multiple-effect evaporator, water is boiled in a sequence of vessels, each held at a lower pressure than the last. Because the boiling temperature of water decreases as pressure decreases, the vapour boiled off in one vessel can be used to heat the next, and only the first vessel (at the highest pressure) requires an external source of heat.
